Farm Journal Field Agronomist Ken Ferrie shows what makes a field ready to plant with a good seedbed in Episode 2 of “Corn College TV,” Season 2.
“You want consistency in your seedbed so that you are able to tuck seed into moisture and have good soil temperature,” Ferrie says.
Farmers should properly manage soil density, residue and moisture.
“This field example is in vertical tillage, so the farmer did his fall tillage, and then came back this spring to level the field,” Ferrie says. “If the tillage isn’t down properly, there will be major implications for the planter and sprayer passes.”
He adds that uniformity in seedbed set the foundation for a uniform corn stand.
