Pro Farmer Crop Tour: Day 2 Dips into Storm-Damaged Southeast Nebraska

Today, scouts on the eastern leg of the Pro Farmer Crop Tour will sample routes from Noblesville, Ind., to Bloomington, Ill., and scouts on the western leg will sample southeast Nebraska.

Will these see similar trends as day one?

“As we make our way through southeast Nebraska, we're going to get into an area that saw severe hailstorm this year, windstorms and a lot of corn and soybeans that had to be replanted,” says Chip Flory, host of AgriTalk.

In addition, he says, many farmers saw damage to their irrigation systems.

“So, we're going to try to keep track of how the corn crop is for the crop that got replanted versus those that decided not to replant,” he says. “What are they doing with the irrigation systems that might still be damaged out there? How much of an impact is that having on the crop? So, we've got a huge discovery process that will be underway in southeast Nebraska.”

As of Aug. 21, USDA estimates just 42% of the Nebraska corn crop is in good-to-excellent condition. For soybeans, 46% is in good-to-excellent condition.

Overall, 55% of the U.S. corn crop is in good-to-excellent condition. That’s down two percentage points from last week and five percentage points from this time last year.

For soybeans, 57% of the U.S. crop is in good-to-excellent condition. That’s down one percentage point from last week and similar to last year.

On the eastern leg, Brian Grete, editor of Pro Farmer, says so far, the route has shown more crop variability than last year.

Soybean pod counts in a 3’x3’ square came in at 871.40 for South Dakota, down from 996.86 in 2021 and 1,026.86 for the three-year average.

In Ohio, samples yielded an average corn yield of 174.17 bu. per acre, down from 185.06 bu. per acre in 2021 but up from the three-year average of 169.03 bu. per acre. Soybean pod counts in a 3’x3’ square totaled 1,131.64 for Ohio, down from 1,195.37 in 2021 and below the three-year average of 1,038.35.
