In Episode 7 of Corn College TV Season 2, Farm Journal Associate Field Agronomist Missy Bauer gives an example of tillage for corn-on-corn.
“A disk ripper will incorporate residue and rip up root balls,” she says.
An example shows a tool set at 15” center and the proper about of shatter between the shanks.
“We want loose soil through the profile and run deep enough to get shatter,” she says.
But is there such a thing as running tillage too deep?
“Yes, in some soils, if we go deeper than we need to, all you’re doing is creating a loose sponge. This can cause more compaction issues due to wheel tracks from the leveling tool tractor and the planter,” she says.
