Liberty® ULTRA, the newest product in BASF’s Liberty franchise, launched last season. Now, a new maximum use rate has been approved for Liberty ULTRA in glufosinate tolerant canola, corn, cotton and soybean.

The new supplemental label for Liberty ULTRA allows an increase in the single application maximum rates as well as cumulative annual allowances. The new single application maximum use rates for Liberty ULTRA now stand at:

● Corn, cotton and soybean: 34 fl ozs/A (up from 29 fl ozs/A last year).

● Canola: 23 fl ozs/A (up from 19 fl ozs/A last year).

“We see this as a tremendous tool for farmers, giving them back more control of their operations,” says Matt Malone, Senior Product Manager for BASF’s Agricultural Solutions North America division, responsible for Liberty and Liberty ULTRA herbicides.

An out-of-the-gate success

Expanding performance capabilities on an already well-received product is a home run for both BASF and the American farmer.

Despite being on the market only a short time, Liberty ULTRA has been widely adopted. In its inaugural 2025 season, out of approximately 90,000 farmers using BASF Liberty franchise products about 60,000 were already using Liberty ULTRA, making Liberty ULTRA BASF’s most successful agricultural product launch to date.

“In every conceivable attribute, Liberty ULTRA is not just better, it is the best Liberty yet,” Malone says.

Exclusive herbicide technology

What is one of the ways Liberty ULTRA outshines the competition? Liberty ULTRA’s exclusive Liberty® Lock Formulation that ensures better droplet retention, better overall spray coverage and better overall active ingredient absorption. In fact, BASF research has demonstrated that, three times more active ingredient is driven into weeds as a result of the Liberty Lock formulation compared to a generic glufosinate.

Additionally, Liberty ULTRA is the first resolved isomer of glufosinate in the U.S. market, thanks to BASF’s proprietary Glu-L™ Technology. Old glufosinate contains a 50/50 mixture of two types of the glufosinate isomer—half inactive, half active. Thanks to Glu-L Technology, the inactive isomers which added excessive volume to old, racemic versions are converted into herbicidally active isomers.

This supercharged combination of Liberty Lock formulations and Glu-L technology allows farmers to utilize a more convenient rate structure with no sacrifice in weed control.

When to use Liberty ULTRA maximum use rate

“Most farmers have been happy with Liberty ULTRA’s performance at current rates, but this new max rate option gives farmers a new tool when weed control gets most difficult,” says Malone, likening the new maximum use rate to an emergency tool for the toughest weed management situations.

“[The maximum use rate] is your emergency brake,” Malone says. “You shouldn’t be driving around town pulling your emergency brake at every single intersection, but when you need it, it’s a wonderful device to have at your disposal.”

Every weed pressure situation requires customized recommendations, but with Liberty ULTRA’s new maximum use rate available, farmers can add another powerful tool to their weed control toolbox.
