Key Insights Provided at Farm Progress Show

At this year’s Farm Progress Show, the DEKALB® Asgrow® tent was a popular place where farmers learned about the latest in seed technology, including DEKALB® Disease Shield™ corn products and Asgrow® Roundup Ready 2 Xtend® soybeans. Attendees toured informational stations throughout the tent to learn more about the customized solutions the DEKALB and Asgrow brands offer including exclusive genetics, crop protection and year-round management tools, that promote yield protection and performance. The embroidered cap promotion at the end of the experience was one of the biggest hits at this year’s show.

The DEKALB Asgrow tent also hosted two of agriculture’s most respected experts, Farm Journal Field Agronomist Ken Ferrie and equipment guru Greg Peterson, better known as “Machinery Pete.”

Ferrie discussed the latest crop conditions around the country and agronomic scouting tips to finish the season strong. “It’s been a real push pull experience for farmers this year,” he told the crowd. “Some areas were too wet to start the year and others have just dried up and those areas may only be 5 miles apart. If we have a September and October like last year, they’ll be surprised how much corn comes out of that late planted stuff. But if we get anything other than that and we’re going to be at it until Thanksgiving, it’s going to be a pretty shallow kernel set.” Highlights of Ferrie’s appearance aired on AgDay, agriculture’s longest-running national television newscast.

For his part, Machinery Pete gave the audience insights into the latest used equipment and machinery auction trends. “The morning of the August USDA report we saw a near instantaneous impact on machinery prices as commodity values fell in the face of higher than anticipated yield forecasts. That report being more negative than anticipated was like a gut punch. Interestingly, in Illinois where the crop is better, they just dealt with that news a little better. I think through the end of the year there’s going to be some opportunities geographically based on yields.” Highlight’s from Peterson’s appearance aired on his national television show, Machinery Pete TV.
