With forecasters predicting precipitation shortages and higher-than-average seasonal temperatures to continue into the fall, farmers will turn an eye toward nitrogen (N). The past few years have been very dry across the Corn Belt. Nitrogen uptake in corn is reduced under drought conditions and the resulting N carryover in some fields may be a potential source of savings on input costs. Soil tests are a vital source of information, and while estimates can be based on yield, N levels in the soil must be as accurate this year as ever.
In years past, farmers have used stalk testing to ascertain N carryover levels in their soil, but this year’s limited rainfall may skew those results. Growers are advised to test for N directly in the soil this fall.
