The U. S. Department of Transportation (DOT) is taking steps to improve the national freight network. To that end, the DOT announced yesterday the inception of their Freight Policy Council. Chaired by DOT Deputy Transportation Secretary John Porcari, the council hopes to position the U.S. to better compete in the Global Economy by making corridor improvements on US ports and by instituting a more unified national freight strategy.
This comes as the Panama Canal is being widened to accommodate larger vessels. I reported in an earlier article that as the canal expands, ports around the world are responding by updating shipping lanes -- and in the case of Brazil, building new ‘Superports’.
A unified national freight strategy is expected to streamline the transport of shipped goods and reduce competition between domestic ports.
