Kip credits two factors for his national championship: seed genetics well matched to his locale and soil and an insecticide and fungicide program built on Headline® fungicide. “Once you’ve got the right genetics, you’ve got to protect it,” he says. “Headline really keeps the disease pressure off the plants and sets them up to deliver to their potential.”

“You hear it a lot and it’s true,” says Cullers. “You have to pay attention to detail, do a bunch of things and do them on time. You have to get some help from the weather too. We were lucky this year.”

He plants all of his contest entries in twin rows at high populations, typically between 60,000 to 70,000 plants per acre.

To achieve his overall win in the No-Till/Strip-Till Irrigated Class, Cullers turned on his center pivot sprinklers during the last week of June and watered the crop daily through the last week of August, about two weeks before harvest. “We give the crop about two-tenths to three-tenths inches of water a day, just enough to take care of its needs, to make sure it isn’t left wanting,” he says.
