I saw a few trends solidify during the last three months of 2019 through the first three months of 2020. They included:

  • Hot Spot: 1-to-3-year-old tractors, combines and equipment in good shape and still under warranty.
  • Hot Spot: 9-to-10-year-old pre-DEF, pre-Tier IV tractors and combines in good shape with low hours.
  • Soft Spot: Any equipment in just average condition; used values are sliding lower.

Let’s look at 300-hp tractors. Values for models just a few years old are holding steady. A 2018 Case IH Magnum 310 CVT with 679 hours sold for $182,000 at a Feb. 29 farm auction in northwest Iowa — a record high for a Magnum 310.

Now let’s look at 10-year-old pre-DEF models. A 2009 John Deere 8430 IVT with 1,650 hours and two owners sold for $162,000 at a Jan. 18, 2020, farm auction in west-central Iowa. That was the highest price on an 8430 in nearly five years.

Of course, not every item is selling high. Check out the variance in sale prices in the data table.

Yes, the 2009 Case IH Magnum 305 with only 1,063 hours sold for $136,000 on Dec. 4, 2019. That was a strong price; it was actually the highest in five years. But the average auction price last year on a Magnum 305 was $77,019.

Watch a 2018 Case IH Magnum 310 tractor sell for new record high auction price at Jeff and Donna Hammen’s farm retirement auction on Feb. 29, 2020, in Rockwell City, Iowa.
