Machinery Pete: Tillage Tool Values Level Up

In 2000, the highest auction price paid for any tillage tool that year was $28,500. Today, that number tops $140,000 and easily ranges from $80,000 to $120,000.

Used tillage equipment values have been running at all-time high levels for the past two years. The new high-speed disks are one shining example. Twice in recent months I’ve been in Michigan filming episodes of “Machinery Pete” TV and have seen Degelman Pro-Till high-speed disks sell sky high.

First was an April 20 sale in Allegan where a Pro-Till 36 model sold for $140,000, which is the second-highest auction price ever on any tillage tool. An Aug. 8 Pewamo farm auction had a Degelman Pro-Till 41 sell for $133,827.

Also of note, in late April, during a Langenburg, Saskatchewan, online farm auction, a 2022 Degelman Pro-Till 40 model sold for $182,500 CAD, which equals $136,273 U.S. dollars.

Record-high auction prices have been popping up left and right in all tillage categories. The highest price ever paid for a disk was $141,000 for a 2021 John Deere 2680H 40' high-speed model that sold at an Emery, S.D., farm auction on Nov. 16, 2022. The record-high price for a field cultivator was set at a July 19, 2023, online auction in Starkweather, N.D., where a 2019 John Deere 2230FH 69½' with 6" spacing and a four-bar harrow sold for $134,000.

Below, you will notice auction prices for vertical tillage tools are smoking hot as well. Note the wide geographic spread. As I said, used tillage equipment levels have been running tight, so when a nice vertical tillage unit, high speed disk or field cultivator pops up for sale at auction, no matter where it is, motivated buyers find it and keep clicking that online bid button again and again.

To illustrate how much prices have soared: In 2000, the highest auction price paid for any tillage tool that year was $28,500 for a 1998 Sunflower 1443 35' disk at a Highmore, S.D., farm auction on Dec. 2.
