Along with new products, corn and soybean growers can anticipate having access next year to revamped seed treatments that are packed with new benefits.

In 1986, California’s voters approved a ballot initiative with admirable aspirations. Proposition 65 requires businesses to display clear warnings about the presence of any chemicals that could cause cancer, birth defects or reproductive harm. Although the law initially raised awareness about potential hazards, it has steered off course in recent years. Now, California residents are inundated with warnings on everything from coffee to parking garages.

Monsanto’s MON 87411 was recently deregulated by the USDA. This is the first step in a multi-year process to get the trait approved by regulatory agencies and into the hands of farmers.

With billions of dollars at stake, the negotiations over Monsanto’s proposed—and so far rejected—merger with Syngenta have moved on to a very visible stage, with both companies speaking directly to shareholders, farmers, and the public.
