A web-based nitrogen fertilizer calculator for small grains has been updated and is available. Developed by Montana State University Extension, the tool works with winter wheat, spring wheat and barley produced after fallow. Available since 2009, the calculator was enhanced in 2015.

Using the calculator, producers enter anticipated wheat price, fertilizer price, soil nitrate level, organic matter and yield goal to get an estimated protein response to applied nitrogen, as well as a yield estimate. The calculator offers optimal nitrogen amounts for maximum net revenue – based on data from field trials in Montana.

Clain Jones, Extension soil fertility specialist in MSU’s Department of Land Resources and Environmental Sciences, says the web-based tool offers a starting point for calculating fertilizer nitrogen.
