2006 National Corn Yield Contest achievement
|
Jerry believes in the value of sweating the details right from germination, so plants have all the resources they need to get growing. Jerry used Headline® fungicide for the first time this year in a disease control program, and says, “Our impression is that it [Headline] keeps the plant healthier.” It’s a lasting impression, given his philosophy that “No corn plant should ever have a bad day.”
To achieve his winning yield, Jerry checks his contest fields five times a week. “What we do at the beginning of the season is so important,” he says. “As soon as the seed germinates, we want it to have everything it needs right there so it can get going and growing.”
To give the corn a running start, he laid a starter fertilizer of 5 gallons of 3-18-18 and 1 gallon of 0-0-25-17S and 1 pint of zinc into the furrow. He also applied a 2-by-2 band of 10 gallons 10-34-0 and 10 gallons of 32-0-0 plus 4 gallons of 0-0-25-17S. When the corn was 6" tall, Cox sidedressed with 200 units of 32% nitrogen. At the foot-tall stage, he made a foliar application of 2 gallons 3-18-18 plus a half-pint of zinc and a half-pint of boron. He dribbled another 15 gallons of 32% nitrogen between rows when corn was 4' tall. At the white blister stage, he came back with another 3 gallons of 26-0-0-.5B.
