Wake-Up Weather for April 22, 2009

Storm Finally Exits Midwest: The only trace of storm that has affected the Corn Belt since the weekend is a few light showers left over Ohio on Wednesday. Drier air is working its way into to western sections with clearing skies across Iowa. Westerly winds there will bring temperatures into the 70’s there. To the east, more cloud cover will keep temperatures in the 50’s and lower 60’s (ºF). Rain over the past 30 days has continued to target Missouri, Illinois, and Indiana, where fields remain very soggy.

Southern Plains Wheat: Across major winter wheat areas over the Southern Plains, warm, dry weather is expected Wednesday through much of Saturday. A rainy pattern over the past month has helped to eliminate the long term rainfall deficits in western Kansas, but a combination of drought and freeze damage over western Oklahoma and the Texas panhandle is likely to hurt winter wheat production. However, heavy rain is likely to return by late in the upcoming weekend.

Argentina Drought Continues: Latest computer guidance indicates the drought in Argentina may last for at least the next two weeks. This comes on the heels of the Buenos Aires Cereals Exchange reducing its 2009 Argentina soybean production estimate to 37 million metric tons. Over the past 30 days, some parts of the Grain Belt have seen less than 40% of normal rainfall.
