Midwest Warmth: A strong area of low pressure is moving through the Midwest today, spreading heavy rain and thunderstorms from Oklahoma and Kansas eastward through Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio. Some severe weather will be found throughout the region as well during the day. So far, St. Louis has already received 1.38” of rain through 7am EST, with some more possible during the day. Precipitation will end from west to east, with the rain departing Ohio tomorrow morning. On the backside of the storm cold air is rushing in after highs in the 60’s (F) from Des Moines to Chicago yesterday. This will allow some of the rain to end as snow later today. Next storm potential arrives Friday, which will be highlighted in the afternoon report.

California Rain
: Another storm is working its way onshore this morning along the California coast. This batch of precipitation may bring 0.5 to 1” of rain to the northern portion of the state by midday tomorrow. On Friday, another storm will arrive, producing another 1-2” in northern California. The constant barrage of storms is likely to last through much of next week, helping to replenish reservoirs, while building up the snowpack in the Sierra Nevada.

China Drought Update
: With the drought persisting in northern China, over 1.66 million livestock and 3.5 million people have no access to drinking water. The lack of rain is also wreaking havoc with the wheat crop, with 81% of the crop in Anhui province damaged. With no significant rain in sight, Chinese officials are trying cloud-seeding techniques in hopes of bringing some rain to the region.

Argentina Update: Heavy rainfall fell from Córdoba and Santa Fe to northern Buenos Aires yesterday, with generally 1-3” falling across the region. However, today marks the start of an extended period of hot and dry weather in the Argentina Grain Belt that may last through much of next week. By Friday, temperatures are likely to be well up into the 90’s, potentially exceeding 100F on Saturday and beyond. The hot and dry conditions will serve to evaporate some of the soil moisture that was built up from the recent rains.
