Wake-Up Weather for May 14, 2009
A strong cold front is barreling eastward across the Midwest Thursday morning. On Wednesday, the front helped to spark widespread severe thunderstorms. In fact, several tornadoes were reported in northern Missouri, with one in Shelbyville in south-central Illinois. Reports of large hail and strong winds have also been quite common. With such dangerous weather occurring, fieldwork was almost certainly halted Wednesday.

The period from Monday to Wednesday featured a half inch to an inch of rain on average across most of North Dakota, keeping spring wheat fields wet. As of Monday, just 13% of the spring wheat crop has been planted, versus the 5-year average of 74%.

Cool, dry weather over the past two weeks is raising concern amongst Saskatchewan canola farmers. Saskatechewan’s Cropping Management Specialist states that cold temperatures can slow down crop development. For any of the crop that has emerged already, the cold has the potential to damage the crop.
