The number of nut-based milk products are growing with a new addition arriving on store shelves this month: peanut milk.

Elmhurst Milked, a plant-based beverage company, is releasing both original and chocolate-flavored peanut milk products.

The beverage contains five ingredients: filtered water, peanuts, cane sugar, natural flavors and salt. According to the National Peanut Board (NPB), the beverage has eight grams of protein pre cup, comparable to that of dairy milk, and lactose free.

Peanut farmers harvested a record crop in 2017, and now the NPB has been looking for a way to utilize them.

“You can’t sell them if you don’t have them,” said Bob Parker, president and CEO of the NPB. “I see it as an opportunity and a challenge so new products like this.”

Peanut milk could also be a direct competitor to almond milk, which will have six times the protein, less sugar, and four times the nuts best-selling almond milk brands Silk and Almond Breeze contain.

According to a report from VegNews, plant-based foods will continue to gain market share in 2018.
