Congratulations to Schmidt Farms, of Sudlersville, Md., for earning a 2010 Top Producer of the Year finalist honor. They were recognized during the Top Producer Seminar in Chicago, Ill.

The official Top Producer of the Year ceremony (as presented by Greg Vincent during the official banquet):

Alan and Hans Schmidt are stunned to be here and it’s not because they’re not deserving. No, you see it’s because they didn’t even know they applied for the award. That’s the kind of people they are. They’re humble, they go about their business and they make a difference in their community, the state of Maryland and in the industries they represent, all while continuously transitioning their business to meet the myriad challenges that come from farming in one of the most environmentally sensitive areas of the country on the DelMarVa Peninsula and bordering the Chesapeake Bay.

Jenny, Hans’ wife applied for them and she included a note that said to please call if they were a finalist so she could tell them they applied. Well, I’ve gotta say she writes a pretty good application.

The Alan and his wife Brenda, and Hans and Jenny took over the operation from their parents and they quickly learned that they needed to adapt to their unique set of circumstances and reinvent their business. Perhaps Jenny said it best last night when we were talking and she explained that they have three businesses as they’ve adapted to organic commodity production, conventional commodity production and their newest business venture a wine grape operation, which they’ve parlayed into a very successful vineyard management consulting business.
