Darrell Smith, Conservation and Machinery Editor

Darrell has been writing about agriculture for 37 years, the last 30 of them for Farm Journal. He covers conservation and environmental issues and also writes about machinery, shops, agronomy and farm management. He has won three writing awards from the American Agricultural Editors’ Association and achieved the association’s Master Writer status.

Before launching his career as an agricultural journalist, the Mt. Carroll, Ill., native earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois and then served 22 months as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army. When not writing, Darrell enjoys reading history, gardening, hunting and assisting with his local Pheasants Forever chapter.
