This week, Paul Neiffer has a conversation with Pro Farmer policy analyst Jim Wiesemeyer. They discuss President Joe Biden’s tax plan, carbon markets and more.

Listen to the discussion:

“After the 2022 elections, the Democrats may lose control of the House,” Wiesemeyer says. “So that’s why you’re seeing a very rapid movement by Biden and his team on their must-pass bills, and tax reform is one of them."

On the carbon credit front, Neiffer and Wiesemeyer both say it may be too soon to fully understand the impact for farmers.

“I think this is going to take far longer than most people realize,” Wiesemeyer says. “Even Secretary Vilsack has said this thing could take several administrations. This is far different than a basic farm safety program.”

With no consensus on how to measure carbon levels or price carbon, Wiesemeyer says a lot of conjecture remains in the area of carbon markets.

“Farmers agree they want carbon markets to be voluntary rather than mandatory and they hope it will be a new revenue stream for them,” he says.
